Antinos was an exceptionally beautiful young Greek from Bithynia who became a friend or lover of the Roman Emperor Hadrian but later died mysteriously in the Nile. In the summer of 1894, a team excavated the magnificent Antinos statue which Emperor Hadrian commissioned in 773 AD when the Romans were digging a path to clear silt from the river. The statue was once a station on the eastern shore for the transport of goods to Alexandria. It also reveals a series of tunnels extending from Lake Marieout. Between 320 and 1303 AD several earthquakes on the coast caused parts of the temple to collapse.
