Wenennefer High Priest of Osiris The name Wenennefer means “beautiful enduring or perpetually perfect” which is actually one of Osiris’s epithets used to describe certain characteristics The son of the High Priest of Osiris Meri and the Choirman of Osiris the High Priest of the god Osiris of ancient Egypt in Abydos during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II of the 19th Dynasty The term perfect is one of Osiris’s epithets referring to the god’s post-mortem power Prehotep I and the vizier Nebamun clearly indicate their relationship as they were not true brothers This plaque originally from Abydos but now in the Cairo Museum depicts Wenennefer flanked by two foxes An inscription states that he is with two men said to be Wenennefer’s brothers The image of the High Priest of Osiris Venennefer

appears on the Naos hieroglyph inscription while worshipping Isis from Abydos This image is included in another hieroglyph depicting the pharaoh seated in opposite corners wearing two separate crowns the Southern Crown Hedjet and the Northern Crown The oracle of Amos is depicted along the route of the sacred boat procession throughout the archaeological site possibly an innovation inspired by Venennefer himself

Another side shows Venennefer with his wife Tiy and his mother Maianui amidst the boats A third side shows Venennefer and his son Sise This architecture is derived from Venennefer's burial temple in Abydos One inscription mentions Osiris and Anubis Venennefer also holds the seal of Hathor in front The inscription on this monument provides further information about the family Venenefer's image appears on the Naos hieroglyphic inscription in Abydos depicted worshipping Isis This image is included in another hieroglyphic depiction of the pharaoh seated in opposite positions wearing two separate crowns the Southern Crown Hedget and the Northern Crown Venenefer served as both an explorer and historian discovering past monuments while simultaneously striving to rebuild and preserve them beautifully
