Symbols of artistic beauty on the statue of Nefertiti

On December 6 1912 this bust was discovered in the ruins of a sculptor's workshop in the ancient city of Akhetaten, now Amarna. A symbol of ancient Egyptian beauty it was found by a German expedition led by Ludwig Borshardt. German Egyptologist Ludwig Borshardt described the discovery of the bust which was praised for its realistic and intricate detail. Created around 1345 BC. in Amarna it is notable for its asymmetrical details. The bust is made of plastered limestone and painted in the characteristic style of Amarna art. Ornamentation is missing from the left eye.


Debate surrounds the accuracy of the artistic interpretation of this digital reproduction which differs from the well-known idealized bust depicting a lighter complexion as well as its current significance and status as an artistic masterpiece. The original bust is currently housed at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin specifically the Ägyptisches é Papyrussammlung and was moved to Germany in 1913.


In 2018 three-dimensional imaging technology was used to create the mummy known as "The Young Woman" believed to be Nefertiti. The face of the famous painted limestone bust of Nefertiti one of the most important figures from ancient Egypt has been recreated for its elegance and remarkably well-preserved color. The incredibly lifelike face standing 48 centimeters 19 inches tall is made of limestone covered with painted stucco and is notable for its blue crown. This 3,300-year-old painted limestone bust is celebrated for its remarkably well-preserved depiction of Nefertiti.
